Class 13 have been learning about life on the Home Front during World War II and the important role women played during the war. We have explored the different jobs they carried out, including nurses, ambulance drivers, air raid wardens and farmers. The children enjoyed finding out how women took on new responsibilities and helped to keep the country running during such a challenging time.
We have also looked at rationing and how families often had to supplement their food supplies by growing their own fruit and vegetables. Inspired by the work of the Land Girls and the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign, we decided to grow some of our own produce. We planted spinach, lettuce and spring onions and have been learning how to care for them as they grow. This has helped us understand the importance of self-sufficiency during wartime and where our food comes from today.
We are looking forward to seeing how our crops develop and hope to plant even more vegetables in the spring.
